How to Control Basement Flooding

How to Control Basement Flooding – Basements are the most common area of your home to flood. Whether it is from heavy rainfall, melting snow, a roof drainage problem or a sump pump mishap, water always seems to find its way into basements. One of the most common causes of basement flooding in Illinois homes and businesses is sump pump failures due to a power outage from a recent storm.

If you have your laundry set up in your basement, the leaks associated with washing machines are very common, especially when they are constantly overloaded. Issues with hot water tanks and water heaters can also result in leaks in your basement.

How to Control Basement Flooding

A Few Ways to Help You Prevent Basement Flooding in your Home:

  • Repair Foundation Cracks  Cracks in your house foundation can invite water seepage into the basement rather easily. To prevent any kind of basement flooding, inspect the full exterior of your home’s foundation, its basement walls, and basement floors on a consistent basis.
  • Properly Landscaped Yard – Make sure the design and shape of your yard doesn’t have anything that tends to direct water towards, and ultimately into, your home. If any small bumps or slopes of your yard directs water towards your home then water can pool up around your property, and eventually find a way into the basement. Depending on your specific landscaping design issue, it may be best to consider having a French drain installed. This drainage tile system will direct water away from your home in order to prevent any water to leak into your basement.
  • Clean Out Your Gutters – Leaves and sticks and other debris clutter up in your gutters. If you are not cleaning them on the regular, you are putting your home at risk for flooding. During a heavy rain or when snow melts, clogged up gutters won’t drain correctly and forces the water to have to dump directly below, usually right next to the foundation of your home.
  • Install a Sump-Pump and Battery Back Up – It is always a good idea to have a sump-pump and a sump pump battery backup if possible. The price and stress associated with having to deal with flood damage cleanup and restoration can be a nightmare.
