fast-response frozen pipe thawing services for homes and businesses across Chicagoland during winter freezes.
No water, low flow, or frost on pipes may indicate a frozen line—delayed thawing can lead to pipe bursts and major water damage.

Frozen pipes can leave you without water and can turn into a much bigger problem if the ice causes the pipe to crack or burst. Our pipe thawing services in Chicago, IL help safely restore water flow when your plumbing freezes during the winter. If a frozen pipe has already burst and caused flooding, our guide on what to do after a burst pipe floods your Chicago home explains what to do first and how to limit additional damage.

At Suburban Plumbing Experts, we'll determine where the pipe is frozen and use the appropriate equipment to thaw it without putting unnecessary stress on the plumbing. If the pipe has cracked or burst, thawing alone won't solve the problem, so we'll inspect the damaged area and explain what needs to be repaired or replaced. The sooner a frozen pipe is addressed, the better the chance of avoiding a much larger plumbing emergency.

Pipe Thawing Services in Chicago, IL

When a pipe freezes, getting it thawed safely is important. Leaving a frozen pipe alone can allow pressure to build inside the plumbing and may lead to a crack or burst once the ice begins to move. Our Chicago pipe thawing services help restore water flow while reducing the risk of damaging the pipe. We serve both residential and commercial properties and can respond when frozen plumbing becomes an immediate problem.

Emergency Pipe Thawing

A frozen pipe can become a burst pipe if it's left untreated, especially when temperatures stay below freezing. We'll locate the frozen section and use the appropriate equipment to thaw it safely and get the water moving again. If the pipe has already cracked or burst, we'll let you know and determine what needs to be repaired or replaced rather than simply thawing the pipe and leaving the underlying problem unresolved.

Residential Pipe Thawing

A frozen pipe can leave part of your home without water and can become a much bigger problem if the pipe cracks or bursts. We provide residential pipe thawing to safely restore water flow and address the frozen section before it causes additional damage. If we find a damaged pipe while thawing it, we'll explain what needs to be repaired or replaced.

Commercial Pipe Thawing

A frozen pipe can be a bigger problem for a business, apartment building, or other commercial property because it can affect employees, tenants, customers, and daily operations. Our commercial plumbers can locate the frozen section, thaw the pipe, and determine whether the plumbing has been damaged by the freeze. We work to get the affected plumbing back in service while keeping disruption to your building or business as limited as possible.

Frozen Water Line Repairs

Freezing temperatures can damage a water line even if the problem isn't obvious at first. A frozen line may crack as the ice expands or reveal a leak once the pipe thaws. We can repair damaged or frozen main water lines, restore your water service, and replace damaged sections when a repair isn't enough.

Preventive Pipe Inspections

If your property has plumbing that runs through an unheated area, it's worth checking for potential problems before the next deep freeze. We can inspect exposed and vulnerable piping, point out areas that may be prone to freezing, and discuss ways to protect them. Taking care of those weak spots ahead of time can help reduce the risk of an emergency, including a flooded basement.

Pipe Insulation and Winter Preparation

Insulating exposed pipes can help protect them when Chicago temperatures drop below freezing. We can identify pipes that are especially vulnerable, including plumbing in garages, crawl spaces, basements, and other unheated areas, and install insulation where it's needed. Taking these steps before winter arrives can lower the risk of frozen and burst pipes when the temperature drops.

How to Prevent Frozen Pipes in Chicago

When temperatures drop below freezing, water inside an exposed pipe can freeze and expand. That expansion puts pressure on the pipe and can eventually cause it to crack or burst. A failed pipe can send water into walls, floors, basements, and other parts of your property, creating a much bigger problem than the original freeze.

A frozen pipe can also leave you without water in part or all of your home. You may notice that a faucet stops running, a toilet won't refill, or water pressure suddenly drops. These problems shouldn't be ignored, especially when temperatures are still below freezing, because the pipe may have frozen somewhere out of sight.

If your plumbing has already made it through a Chicago winter, it's also worth checking for damage that may not be obvious yet. Our guide on what Chicago homeowners should check after winter covers some of the areas that deserve a closer look.

Our Frozen Pipe Thawing Process

When you call us about a frozen pipe, the first step is figuring out where the freeze has occurred and whether the pipe has been damaged. From there, we'll thaw the affected section carefully, check the plumbing once the water starts moving again, and address any damage we find.

  • Find the Frozen Section: We'll determine where the pipe is frozen and check the surrounding plumbing for signs of a problem. If you'd like to understand what you can safely try before calling a plumber, our guide on how to thaw a frozen pipe in Chicago covers the basics.

  • Thaw the Pipe: We'll use the appropriate method and equipment to thaw the frozen section without putting unnecessary stress on the pipe. The goal is to restore water flow while reducing the chance of damaging the plumbing.

  • Check for Damage: Once the pipe has thawed, we'll check it for cracks, leaks, or other damage. A frozen pipe can sometimes split during the freeze, so restoring water flow doesn't necessarily mean the problem is over. If we find damage, we'll explain what needs to be repaired or replaced.

  • Help Prevent Another Freeze: If there's an obvious reason the pipe froze, we'll point it out and discuss ways to reduce the risk of it happening again. That might mean insulating an exposed pipe, sealing a drafty area, or addressing another vulnerable part of the plumbing.

Frozen pipes aren't just an inconvenience. A pipe that freezes and cracks can eventually lead to burst pipes and costly repairs. Thawing the pipe carefully and checking for damage afterward can help keep a small winter plumbing problem from becoming a much bigger one.

Getting Your Water Flowing Again After a Pipe Freezes

A frozen pipe can be more than an inconvenience. If the ice isn't dealt with properly, the pipe can crack or burst and leave you with water damage and a much larger repair. This is especially important during a Chicago cold snap, when pipes in unheated areas can freeze quickly.

If you have a frozen pipe, our plumbers can locate the affected section and determine the safest way to get the water moving again. Depending on the situation, that may include specialized methods such as hot water hydro jetting to help clear the frozen section and restore flow. Once the pipe has thawed, we'll also check for cracks or leaks, since a pipe that has frozen may already be damaged. Whether it's your home or a commercial property, we'll focus on getting the water back on while making sure there isn't a larger plumbing problem that needs attention.

Why Professional Pipe Thawing Matters in Chicago

A frozen pipe can seem like a simple problem, but thawing it the wrong way can make things worse. A pipe that's already under pressure may crack as the ice moves, and you may not know there's damage until water starts flowing again. Frozen plumbing can also leave part of your home or business without water and create problems that are much harder to deal with if they're ignored.

Our plumbers can locate the frozen section, determine whether the pipe has been damaged, and choose an appropriate way to thaw it. Addressing the problem carefully can help you avoid turning a frozen pipe into a burst pipe and a much larger repair.

Should You Thaw a Frozen Pipe Yourself?

A frozen pipe isn't always something you need a plumber for, but it's important to know where the risks are. Simple steps such as warming the area around an exposed pipe may help in some situations. The problem comes when homeowners use too much heat, can't reach the frozen section safely, or don't realize the pipe has already cracked.

  • Too much heat can damage the pipe: Using an open flame or concentrating intense heat on one small section can damage the pipe and create a much bigger problem. A gradual, controlled approach is safer.

  • Be careful around electricity: Hair dryers and other electrical equipment should never be used where water could reach the device, outlet, or electrical connections. If the area is wet or you aren't sure whether it's safe, don't take the risk.

  • Some frozen pipes are difficult to reach: Pipes behind walls, above ceilings, under floors, or in cramped areas can be difficult to access without creating additional problems. Trying to reach them yourself can also put you at risk of burns, falls, or other injuries.

  • The pipe may already be damaged: One of the biggest concerns with a frozen pipe is that you may not know it has cracked until the ice begins to thaw. Once water starts moving again, a damaged pipe can begin leaking quickly.

If you're not sure where the pipe is frozen, can't safely access it, or suspect it has already cracked, it's better to have a plumber take a look. At Suburban Plumbing Experts, we can locate the frozen section, thaw it using an appropriate method, and check for damage afterward. If the pipe has already burst, we can also handle the necessary burst pipe repair service.

Why Choose Professional Pipe Thawing in Chicago?

When a pipe freezes, getting the water moving again is only part of the job. You also need to know whether the pipe was damaged during the freeze and why it froze in the first place. Our Chicago pipe thawing service focuses on both the immediate problem and any plumbing issues we find along the way.

  • Experience With Frozen Plumbing: Frozen pipes aren't always in an easy-to-reach location. Our plumbers can trace the problem, determine where the pipe has frozen, and figure out the best way to thaw it based on the type and location of the plumbing.

  • 24/7 Emergency Service: A frozen pipe doesn't always happen at a convenient time. We provide 24/7 emergency plumbing service for situations where a frozen pipe is affecting your water supply or has already caused a leak or burst.

  • The Right Equipment for the Job: Different frozen pipes call for different approaches. Depending on the situation, we may use specialized thawing equipment, infrared technology to help locate the frozen area, or methods such as hot water hydro jetting when appropriate.

  • Check for Damage After Thawing: Getting the water flowing again doesn't necessarily mean the problem is over. We'll check the pipe after thawing for cracks, leaks, or other signs of damage that could cause trouble once the plumbing is back under pressure.

  • Help Avoid a Bigger Repair: A frozen pipe can turn into a burst pipe if it's ignored or thawed improperly. Addressing the problem early can help limit water damage and may save you from dealing with a much larger repair.

  • More Than Pipe Thawing: If we find another plumbing issue while we're working, we'll explain what we found and what needs to be done. That could include repairing a damaged pipe, insulating exposed plumbing, or addressing another reason the pipe is prone to freezing.

Frozen pipes are a common winter plumbing problem in Chicago, but they don't have to turn into a major emergency. Getting the frozen section addressed quickly and checking the plumbing afterward can make a big difference in preventing additional damage.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pipe Thawing Services in Chicago, IL

Q: What is pipe thawing, and why is it necessary for Chicago homeowners?
A: Pipe thawing is the process of safely removing ice from a frozen pipe so water can flow again. When a pipe freezes, the ice can put pressure on the plumbing and may cause the pipe to crack or burst. Getting the frozen section addressed promptly can help reduce the chance of a much larger plumbing problem, especially during extended periods of below-freezing weather.

Q: How do I know if my pipes are frozen?
A: Little or no water coming from a faucet is one of the most common signs, especially when temperatures are below freezing. You may also notice frost on an exposed pipe or a sudden drop in water pressure. If only one faucet has little or no water, the problem may be a frozen section somewhere along that branch of the plumbing. If your entire home has lost water, there may be a larger issue that needs to be investigated.

Q: How quickly can a plumber arrive for frozen pipe thawing in Chicago?
A: We provide 24/7 emergency pipe thawing throughout Chicago and the surrounding Chicagoland area. Response times depend on factors such as where you're located and how busy emergency service is at the time you call. If you have a frozen pipe, calling sooner rather than later gives you a better chance of addressing the problem before the pipe cracks or bursts.

Q: Is professional pipe thawing safe for my plumbing system?
A: When the appropriate method is used for the pipe and the situation, professional thawing can safely restore water flow without putting unnecessary stress on the plumbing. We first locate the frozen section and determine the best way to thaw it. Depending on the circumstances, our methods may include controlled heat, specialized thawing equipment, infrared technology, or hot water hydro jetting. We also check the pipe afterward for signs of damage.

Q: Why shouldn't I just thaw my own frozen pipes?
A: Some frozen pipes can be addressed with simple precautions, but DIY thawing can become risky when you can't safely access the pipe or don't know where the freeze is located. Never use an open flame to thaw plumbing, and be especially careful with electrical heating equipment around water. If the pipe is behind a wall, under a floor, underground, or already showing signs of damage, it's better to have a plumber handle it.

Q: What temperature causes pipes to freeze in Chicago homes?
A: There isn't one temperature at which every pipe will freeze. Pipes are more vulnerable as temperatures remain below freezing, particularly when they're located in unheated areas or exposed to cold drafts. Plumbing in exterior walls, garages, crawl spaces, and other poorly insulated areas can freeze before protected interior pipes do. Chicago's extended winter cold makes these areas especially important to watch.

Q: Can you thaw underground or water main lines?
A: Yes, depending on the location and condition of the line. Frozen underground water lines and service lines can be difficult to access and may require specialized equipment and a different approach than an interior pipe. We'll first determine where the freeze is occurring and whether the line has been damaged before deciding how to proceed.

Q: Can you thaw pipes in both homes and businesses in Chicago?
A: Yes. We provide pipe thawing for residential and commercial properties throughout Chicago and the surrounding Chicagoland area. That includes homes, apartment buildings, restaurants, offices, retail properties, and other commercial buildings. We'll locate the frozen section, work to restore water flow, and check for damage that may have occurred during the freeze.

Q: What happens if a frozen pipe bursts while being thawed?
A: If the pipe has cracked or bursts as it thaws, the priority is to shut off the water and stop the leak. We can then inspect the damaged section and determine whether it can be repaired or needs to be replaced. If you're dealing with an active burst pipe, we also provide emergency burst pipe repair throughout Chicago.

Q: How can I prevent my pipes from freezing again next winter?
A: Start by insulating exposed plumbing in unheated areas and sealing drafts that allow cold air to reach your pipes. Keep your home heated during cold weather, even when you're away, and disconnect outdoor hoses before winter. If certain pipes have frozen before, a preventive inspection can help identify why and determine whether additional insulation or other improvements would help.
