Suburban Plumbing Experts provides water heater repair throughout Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. Our licensed plumbers work on traditional tank water heaters, tankless systems, gas units, and electric models. We'll find out what's causing the problem, explain what we find, and recommend the repair that makes sense for your system.

Whether you're dealing with a complete loss of hot water, a leak, inconsistent temperatures, pilot light problems, or another issue, we're ready to help. For problems that can't wait, emergency water heater service is available to get your hot water back and help prevent a small issue from turning into a bigger repair.

Water Heater Repair for Chicago Homes and Businesses

When your water heater stops working, you want to know what's wrong and whether it can be fixed. At Suburban Plumbing Experts, we provide water heater repair throughout Chicago and the surrounding suburbs for both homes and businesses.

Our plumbers work on traditional tank water heaters, tankless systems, gas units, and electric models. We'll look at what's causing the problem, explain what we find, and recommend the repair that makes sense. We focus on fixing the actual issue instead of replacing parts that don't need to be replaced.

Gas Water Heater Repair

Gas water heaters can develop problems with the pilot light, burner, thermostat, gas connections, venting, and other components. You might notice that the water isn't getting hot, the pilot won't stay lit, the unit is making unusual noises, or the system has stopped working altogether.

We'll inspect the water heater to find the cause of the problem and make the necessary repairs to get your hot water working again. If we find a larger issue, we'll explain what's going on and talk you through your options.

Electric Water Heater Repair

When an electric water heater isn't working properly, the problem may be with a heating element, thermostat, wiring, or another electrical component. Depending on what's wrong, you may have lukewarm water, less hot water than usual, longer recovery times, or no hot water at all.

Our plumbers will diagnose the issue and determine what needs to be repaired. Once we know what's causing the problem, we'll explain the situation and get your system back to providing reliable hot water.

Tankless Water Heater Repair

Tankless water heaters work differently from traditional tank systems, so problems often require a different approach. Mineral buildup, flow restrictions, ignition problems, and temperature changes can all affect how well the system performs.

We'll troubleshoot the unit, identify what's causing the issue, and make the appropriate repairs or adjustments. Our goal is to get your tankless water heater working properly again so you can get back to having reliable hot water.

Common Water Heater Problems We Fix in Chicago

Water heater problems can show up in a lot of different ways. You might suddenly have no hot water, notice the water isn't getting as hot as it used to, hear strange noises coming from the unit, or find water leaking onto the floor. Whatever is happening, the first step is figuring out what's actually causing it.

Our plumbers diagnose and repair water heater problems throughout Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. We'll inspect the system, find the source of the issue, and explain what needs to be done. In many cases, a failed component can be repaired or replaced without replacing the entire water heater.

Finding Out What's Wrong With Your Water Heater

Before we start making repairs, we'll troubleshoot the problem and inspect the parts of the system that could be causing it. Whether you're dealing with inconsistent hot water, a complete loss of heat, a leak, an error code, or another mechanical problem, we'll work to pinpoint the cause.

Once we know what's wrong, we'll explain your options. If the water heater is worth repairing, we'll tell you what the repair involves. If the unit is older or has a more serious problem, we'll also let you know when water heater replacement may make more sense. If you're weighing both options, our guide on repairing or replacing your Chicago water heater can help you understand what to consider.

Heating Element & Thermostat Repairs

Heating elements and thermostats are common sources of trouble in electric water heaters. When one starts to fail, you may notice that you have less hot water, the temperature keeps changing, or the water heater takes much longer to recover. In some cases, you may have no hot water at all.

We'll test the components to find out what's failing and make the necessary repair or replacement to get your hot water working properly again.

Finding and Repairing Water Heater Leaks

Even a small water heater leak is worth having checked. The problem could be coming from a valve, fitting, supply line, or another connection that can often be repaired. A leak from the tank itself, however, may point to a more serious problem.

We'll inspect the water heater and surrounding connections to find where the water is coming from and determine the best way to fix it. If a repair is possible, we'll explain what's needed. If the tank has failed, we'll let you know what your replacement options are.

Repairing Water Heater Components

A water heater depends on several parts working together properly. Depending on the type of system, problems can involve the pressure relief valve, gas controls, igniter, burner, electrical connections, or other components.

Our plumbers troubleshoot these issues and repair or replace failed parts when possible. The goal is to get your water heater working safely and reliably without recommending more work than the problem actually requires.

Emergency Water Heater Repair When You Need Help Fast

A water heater problem can go from inconvenient to serious pretty quickly. A leaking tank or burst connection can send water across the floor, while a complete failure can leave your home or business without hot water when you need it most.

Suburban Plumbing Experts provides emergency water heater repair throughout Chicagoland. When there's an urgent problem, we'll work to find the cause, stop an active leak when possible, and get your system back up and running as quickly as we can. Our emergency plumbing team handles urgent problems with both gas and electric water heaters.

Whether your water heater stops working in the middle of the night, starts leaking unexpectedly, or fails during a cold Chicago winter, we're ready to help. Our goal is to get the situation under control, explain what's wrong, and make the repair needed to get your hot water back.

Signs Your Water Heater May Need a Repair

Water heaters don't always fail without warning. In many cases, you'll notice changes in how the system sounds or performs before it stops working completely. Paying attention to those signs can give you a chance to address the problem before you're dealing with a bigger repair, water damage, or an unexpected replacement.

If you're not sure what a particular symptom means, our guide on water heater warning signs and what they mean goes into more detail about the problems homeowners commonly notice.

Some signs that it's time to have your water heater checked include:

  • No hot water or changing temperatures: If your water suddenly turns cold or the temperature keeps going up and down, the problem could involve a thermostat, heating element, burner, or another component.

  • Water around the water heater: A puddle or moisture around the unit can come from a leaking connection, valve, or tank and should not be ignored.

  • Popping, banging, or rumbling noises: Strange sounds can be caused by sediment buildup inside a tank or a component that isn't working properly.

  • Rusty or discolored water: Rust-colored water can be a sign of corrosion inside the water heater or another problem that needs to be evaluated.

  • Not enough hot water: If your household is running out of hot water much faster than it used to, the system may have a performance problem or a component that is beginning to fail.

Why Chicago Homeowners Trust Us With Water Heater Repairs

When your water heater stops working, you want a plumber who will figure out what's actually wrong and give you a straight answer about how to fix it. You shouldn't have to worry about being pushed into a replacement when a repair will take care of the problem.

At Suburban Plumbing Experts, we take the time to inspect your water heater, find the cause of the problem, and explain what we find. We'll look at the age and condition of the system, talk through your options, and recommend the repair that makes the most sense for your situation.

We know how disruptive it is to lose hot water, especially when a problem happens unexpectedly. That's why we focus on dependable service, quality workmanship, and repairs that are done correctly so you can get back to having reliable hot water.

Repairs That Can Get Your Water Heater Working Again

A water heater that's acting up doesn't automatically mean it's time for a new one. Many problems can be repaired, especially when they're caught before a small issue turns into a major failure.

Our plumbers repair problems such as leaking connections, faulty thermostats, failed heating components, pressure relief valve issues, and other problems that can affect how your water heater performs. We'll inspect the system, explain what's going on, and let you know whether a repair is a practical way to get your hot water back.

A proper repair can restore reliable hot water and help you get more life out of your existing water heater. If the system has reached the point where replacement makes more sense, we can also help with water heater installation for both tank and tankless systems.

Regular water heater maintenance can also help catch problems before they turn into unexpected repairs. If you're dealing with sediment buildup or haven't had your system cleaned in a while, our guide on water heater cleaning, why it matters, how it's done, and when Chicago homeowners need it explains what professional cleaning can do for your system.

Water Heater Repair FAQs for Chicago Homeowners

Q: What are the most common water heater problems you repair in the Chicago area?
A: We see a wide range of water heater problems in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. Sediment buildup is common, especially in traditional tank systems, and can lead to popping or rumbling noises. We also repair failed heating elements on electric units, pilot light and thermostat problems on gas water heaters, leaking valves, and other components that can cause the system to stop working properly. Cold winter temperatures can also put more demand on your water heater, which is why problems tend to become more noticeable during the colder months.

Q: How fast can you get to me for a water heater repair in Chicago or the suburbs?
A: We offer same-day water heater service throughout Chicago and the surrounding suburbs, with emergency service available when a problem can't wait. When you call, we'll find out what's happening and work to get a plumber to you as quickly as possible. Our plumbers arrive prepared to diagnose common water heater problems and make repairs when possible during the same visit. Call 708-801-6530 to schedule service.

Q: Should I repair or replace my water heater?
A: It depends on the age and condition of the unit, what's wrong with it, and how much the repair will cost. A relatively newer water heater with a failed thermostat or heating element may be worth repairing, while an older unit with repeated problems, significant corrosion, or a leaking tank may make replacement the better choice. We'll explain what we find and give you an honest recommendation rather than automatically pushing you toward a replacement. If you're considering a new unit, our water heater replacement cost guide for Chicagoland homeowners can help you understand the factors that affect replacement costs.

Q: How much does water heater repair cost in Chicago?
A: There's no single price for water heater repair because the cost depends on what's wrong and which parts or repairs are needed. A simple component repair will generally cost less than a more involved repair involving multiple components. We provide pricing before beginning the work so you understand what the repair will cost and can decide how you'd like to proceed. If the repair no longer makes financial sense, we'll explain that too.

Q: Do you repair tankless water heaters?
A: Yes. We repair tankless water heaters and can troubleshoot problems such as mineral buildup, flow restrictions, ignition issues, error codes, and temperature problems. Tankless systems work differently from traditional water heaters, so proper diagnosis is important. We'll identify what's causing the problem and explain what needs to be done to get the system operating properly again.

Q: My water heater is making a banging or rumbling noise. Is that serious?
A: It can be a sign of sediment buildup inside a traditional tank water heater. As sediment collects on the bottom of the tank, it can create the popping, banging, or rumbling sounds you hear when the burner or heating element runs. Sediment can also make the system work harder and reduce its efficiency. Having the unit inspected and flushed can help determine how much buildup is present and whether anything else needs attention.

Q: There is water pooling around my water heater. What should I do?
A: Don't ignore it. Water around the unit could be coming from a loose connection, valve, pressure relief component, or the tank itself. If you have an active leak, shut off the water supply to the unit if you can do so safely and call a plumber. If you're dealing with a gas water heater and suspect a gas leak, leave the area and seek emergency assistance. We provide emergency water heater service for urgent leaks and other problems that can't wait.

Q: Do you work on both gas and electric water heaters?
A: Yes. We repair both gas and electric water heaters. Gas water heater problems can involve the pilot assembly, burner, thermocouple, gas valve, thermostat, or other components. Electric systems commonly develop problems with heating elements, thermostats, wiring, and electrical connections. We'll diagnose the system, make the appropriate repair, and check its operation afterward.

Q: How often should I have my water heater serviced?
A: Annual maintenance is a good starting point for most water heaters. Routine service gives us a chance to flush sediment, inspect important components, check the temperature and pressure relief valve, and look for early signs of corrosion or other problems. Homes with heavier hot water use or more significant mineral buildup may benefit from more frequent service. Regular maintenance can help keep the system running efficiently and catch problems before they turn into unexpected breakdowns.

Q: Are your plumbers licensed to work on water heaters in Illinois?
A: Yes. Suburban Plumbing Experts holds Illinois Plumbing License #055-044116 and is fully insured. Our plumbers work on water heater repair, installation, and replacement for residential and commercial properties throughout the Chicago area. We follow applicable plumbing and safety requirements and take the time to make sure the work is completed properly.

They called to see if it would be okay if they came earlier than our scheduled appointment (awesome). Upon arrival, Mike and Adam were extremely professional and courteous. Mike is very knowledgeable. He managed to troubleshoot a water pressure issue quickly and resolved it in no time. He also brought a drain pipe issue to my attention (the build up of grease) and suggested several low-cost recommendations to remedy it myself. The kitchen faucet and sink are back to working the way they should. I couldn't be more happy with the service. I would highly recommend them and plan on using them for any future plumbing needs.

First Will had to assess the problem and unfortunately we did need a new hot water heater. He arrived to install it on the scheduled day and did a great job. He also recommended a smaller heater - we didn't need such a big heater - which will save us money in fuel costs. Overall great job

We had an issue with how our water heater vent had been installed and just needed it to be adjusted. Every other plumber we had out to look at it tried to sell us a new water heater. Mike came and gave a very common sense idea for how we might revent it using the existing vent lines. He clearly knows his stuff and doesn't just try to sell you something you don't need. While he was here, we also had him fix a leaking valve which he was able to do quickly and efficiently. Very happy with the service and will call again with plumbing matters in the future!
