professional water heater replacement services for gas, electric, tank, and tankless systems across Chicagoland homes and businesses.
If your water heater is leaking, rusted, or failing repeatedly, replacement is often the safest and most cost-effective long-term solution.

Water heater replacement in Chicago becomes important when an older or failing system can no longer keep up with your hot water needs. You may notice longer heating times, inconsistent temperatures, rising energy bills, frequent repairs, or signs of a leak. Waiting too long can leave you without hot water and, in the case of a failing tank, put your home at risk of water damage.

Suburban Plumbing Experts provides water heater replacement throughout Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. We'll evaluate your existing system, talk with you about your home's hot water needs, and help you choose a properly sized replacement that fits your space, plumbing setup, and budget.

Once you've chosen the right system, our plumbers handle the removal of the old water heater and the installation of the new one. We pay attention to the connections, safety components, venting where applicable, and other details that help your new water heater operate properly from day one.

Signs It's Time to Replace Your Water Heater

Knowing when to replace your water heater can save you from dealing with a sudden breakdown, a flooded utility area, or days without reliable hot water. Some water heater problems can be repaired, but there comes a point when putting more money into an aging system no longer makes sense. Our plumbers can help you figure out whether water heater repair is still a good option or if replacement is the better choice.

Some of the signs that your water heater may be nearing the end of its life include:

  • Your water heater is 10–12 years old or older: Traditional tank water heaters don't last forever. Once a unit gets into this age range, it's worth paying closer attention to its condition, especially if you've already had repairs.

  • You see rust, corrosion, or leaks: Rust around the tank or water collecting near the unit can be a warning that the system is deteriorating. A leak from the tank itself often means replacement is the safest option.

  • You're running out of hot water: If your water heater can't keep up with your household anymore or takes much longer to recover, the system may be wearing out or no longer be the right size for your needs.

  • The tank is making popping or banging noises: These sounds are often caused by sediment collecting inside the tank. Over time, that buildup can make the water heater work harder and contribute to premature wear.

  • You're spending more on repairs: An occasional repair doesn't necessarily mean you need a new water heater. But when an older unit keeps breaking down and repair costs continue adding up, replacement may provide better long-term value.

Replacing your water heater before it fails completely can also help you avoid an emergency situation. You can choose the right system on your own timeline instead of dealing with a leaking or completely failed unit when you least expect it.

If you're trying to decide between another repair and a replacement, our guide on repairing or replacing your Chicago water heater walks through the factors that can help you make the right decision.

Water Heater Replacement for Chicago Homes and Businesses

When your water heater has reached the end of its life, replacing it should be straightforward. Suburban Plumbing Experts provides water heater replacement throughout Chicago, the west suburbs, and south suburbs, helping homeowners and businesses replace old, failing, or inefficient systems with equipment that fits their actual hot water needs.

We'll evaluate your existing setup, help you choose the right replacement, and handle the installation from start to finish. Our goal is to make sure your new water heater is properly sized, safely connected, and ready to provide reliable hot water for years to come.

Tank and Tankless Water Heater Replacement

We replace both traditional tank water heaters and tankless systems throughout Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. If your current unit is getting old, can't keep up with your household, or you're simply ready for something more efficient, we'll help you compare your options.

We'll consider your home's hot water demand, available space, existing plumbing, and budget before recommending a system. That way, you get a water heater that fits your home instead of paying for equipment you don't really need.

Removing and Hauling Away Your Old Water Heater

Replacing a water heater isn't just about putting in the new unit. Someone also has to disconnect and remove the old one.

Our plumbers handle that part of the job for you. We'll safely disconnect the existing water heater, remove it from the property, and properly dispose of it so you're not left figuring out what to do with a heavy, outdated unit.

Emergency Water Heater Replacement

Sometimes a water heater doesn't give you much warning before it fails. A leaking tank or major system failure can leave you without hot water and potentially put your home at risk for water damage.

When a repair isn't the practical option, we can help with emergency water heater replacement. We'll assess the condition of your system, explain what happened, and help you choose a properly sized replacement so you can get your hot water back as quickly as possible.

Gas Connections and Venting

Replacing a gas water heater can involve more than simply disconnecting the old unit and connecting the new one. Older installations may have gas connections, shutoff valves, or venting components that need to be inspected or updated.

We'll check these components during the replacement and address anything that needs attention for the new water heater to operate safely and properly. Proper gas supply and venting are important parts of a reliable installation.

Choosing the Right Water Heater for Your Home

The best replacement water heater isn't necessarily the biggest or most expensive one. Household size, hot water usage, available space, existing plumbing, fuel type, and efficiency goals all play a role in choosing the right system.

We'll walk you through the available tank, tankless, gas, and electric options and help you choose a system that makes sense for your property. Our goal is to give you reliable hot water without selling you more equipment than you need.

A Proper Installation Protects Your New Water Heater

A new water heater is a significant investment, so the installation needs to be done correctly. Our water heater installation services in Chicago focus on proper sizing, safe connections, and installation according to manufacturer requirements and applicable local codes.

Once the new system is installed, we'll make sure everything is operating properly before we leave. A good installation can help your new water heater perform efficiently, reduce avoidable problems, and give you dependable hot water for years to come.

Choosing Between a Tank and Tankless Water Heater

Replacing your water heater is a good opportunity to look at your options instead of automatically replacing the old unit with the same type. The right choice depends on how much hot water your household uses, how much space you have, your existing plumbing, your budget, and what you're looking for in a new system.

At Suburban Plumbing Experts, we help homeowners and businesses throughout Chicago and the surrounding suburbs compare traditional tank water heaters with tankless systems. We'll look at how your current system is being used and help you understand which option makes the most sense for your property.

Cost is also an important part of the decision. Tankless systems can cost more to install, while traditional tanks generally have a lower upfront cost. Efficiency, installation requirements, available space, and long-term operating costs should all be considered before you make a choice. Our water heater replacement cost guide for Chicago and the suburbs breaks down what homeowners can expect to pay for different replacement options.

Tank Water Heater Replacement

Traditional tank water heaters are still a great fit for many Chicago-area homes and businesses. They keep a supply of hot water ready to go and usually cost less to purchase and install than a tankless system.

They can also be a practical choice for older Chicago homes that are already set up for a standard tank water heater. We'll make sure the new unit is properly sized for your hot water needs and installed correctly so you get dependable performance without paying for more capacity than you need.

Tankless Water Heater Replacement

Tankless water heaters heat water as you need it instead of keeping a large tank of water hot all day. They take up less space, can reduce standby heat loss, and provide a continuous supply of hot water when properly sized for the home.

A tankless system can make sense if you're looking for greater efficiency, want to free up utility space, or regularly find yourself running out of hot water. Before recommending one, we'll look at your existing plumbing, gas or electrical capacity, and household hot water demand to make sure your home can support the system.

If you're not sure which option is right for you, we'll explain the differences between tank and tankless water heaters, including the upfront cost, installation requirements, and long-term benefits, so you can make a decision that actually fits your home or business.

Emergency Water Heater Replacement When You Need Hot Water Fast

A water heater can fail at the worst possible time. A leaking tank, serious corrosion, or complete system failure can leave you without hot water and, in some cases, put your home or business at risk for water damage.

Suburban Plumbing Experts provides emergency water heater replacement throughout Chicagoland when repairing the existing unit no longer makes sense. We'll inspect the system, explain what's wrong, and help you choose a properly sized replacement that fits your hot water needs and your property.

Whether you have a traditional tank, gas or electric water heater, or a tankless system, our plumbers can handle the replacement from start to finish. We'll remove the failed unit and install the new system properly so you can get back to having reliable hot water.

When you can't wait until normal business hours, our emergency plumbers are available 24/7 to help with urgent water heater problems and protect your property from further damage.

Why Chicago Homeowners Trust Us for Water Heater Replacement

Replacing a water heater is a big decision, especially when you're dealing with an older system or an unexpected failure. You want to know that the new unit is the right size, installed properly, and actually makes sense for your home.

At Suburban Plumbing Experts, we take the time to look at your existing system, your household's hot water needs, and the setup of your home before recommending a replacement. Our plumbers have years of experience replacing water heaters throughout Chicago and the surrounding suburbs, including older homes with plumbing systems that require a little more attention.

We believe you should understand what you're paying for before the work begins. We'll explain your options, answer your questions, and recommend the system that fits your property rather than pushing an upgrade you don't need. Whether your old water heater has simply reached the end of its life or failed unexpectedly, we'll help you get a dependable replacement installed correctly.

Signs Your Water Heater May Be Near the End of Its Life

Water heaters usually don't fail completely without giving you some warning first. Changes in performance, strange noises, leaks, or rusty water can all be signs that your system is starting to wear out. Catching those problems early can help you avoid an unexpected breakdown and the hassle of replacing your water heater in an emergency.

One of the first things homeowners often notice is inconsistent hot water. If your water isn't staying hot, you're running out of hot water sooner than you used to, or the system takes much longer to heat back up, something may be changing inside the unit.

Strange popping, banging, or rumbling noises are another common warning sign. These sounds are often caused by sediment collecting inside a tank and forcing the water heater to work harder. Over time, that buildup can contribute to premature wear. If you're noticing unusual sounds, leaks, rusty water, or other changes, this guide on what your Chicago water heater's warning signs mean can help you understand what may be happening.

Rust around the tank, discolored hot water, or water collecting around the base of the unit are more serious signs. A leaking connection or valve may be repairable, but when the storage tank itself is leaking, replacement is generally the only reliable solution.

Age matters too. Traditional tank water heaters commonly start reaching the later part of their service life around 10–12 years. Hard water, sediment buildup, Chicago's cold winters, and years of regular use can all contribute to additional wear.

If you're seeing several of these warning signs, our plumbers can inspect your water heater and help you decide whether another repair makes sense or if it's time for a replacement.

What to Expect When We Replace Your Water Heater

Replacing a water heater doesn't have to be a complicated process. From choosing the right system to removing the old unit and getting the new one running, our plumbers handle the important details so you don't have to worry about what's happening behind the scenes.

At Suburban Plumbing Experts, we keep the process straightforward. We'll look at your current water heater, talk with you about your hot water needs, and make sure the replacement is the right fit for your home or business.

We Start by Looking at Your Current System

Before recommending a replacement, we'll evaluate your existing water heater and look at how your home uses hot water. We'll consider things like the age and condition of the current unit, household size, typical water usage, available space, fuel type, and what you're hoping to get from the new system.

The goal is to install a water heater that's properly sized for your needs, not simply sell you the biggest or most expensive option.

We Remove the Old Water Heater

Once you've selected your new water heater, we'll safely disconnect and remove the old unit. We'll take care of the removal and disposal so you're not left with an old, heavy water heater taking up space in your home.

We Install the New Water Heater Properly

Our plumbers install your new water heater with the proper connections, safety components, and manufacturer requirements in mind. We'll make sure everything is connected correctly and meets applicable Chicago-area plumbing and safety requirements.

Whether you're replacing a traditional tank water heater or switching to a tankless system, proper installation is important for getting reliable performance from your new equipment.

We Test Everything Before We Leave

Once the installation is complete, we don't just pack up and leave. We'll test the system, check the connections for leaks, and make sure the water heater is operating properly.

We'll also go over the basic operation and maintenance of your new system and answer any questions you have before we finish the job.

How a New Water Heater Can Improve Efficiency

Replacing an old water heater can do more than give you reliable hot water again. If your current system is years old and struggling to keep up, a newer, properly sized unit may operate more efficiently and help reduce the energy wasted by an aging system.

Older water heaters can lose efficiency as sediment builds up, components wear down, and insulation becomes less effective. A new system can heat water more efficiently and provide better recovery, especially when the replacement is properly sized for your household's actual hot water use.

Whether you choose a newer high-efficiency tank water heater or decide to upgrade to a tankless system, professional installation is important for getting the most from your investment. After installation, regular water heater maintenance can also help keep the system running efficiently and catch developing problems before they turn into expensive repairs.

Water Heater Replacement FAQs for Chicago Homeowners

Q: My water heater is 11 years old and starting to act up. How do I decide between repairing it one more time versus just replacing it?

A: It really depends on the condition of the unit and the cost of the repair. Once a traditional tank water heater gets into the 10–12-year range, it's worth looking at the bigger picture instead of automatically putting more money into it. If the repair is relatively minor and the rest of the system is in good shape, repairing it may still make sense. If you're dealing with repeated breakdowns, corrosion, or a major repair on an already aging unit, replacement may be the better long-term choice. We'll inspect the system and give you an honest recommendation based on what we find.

Q: My water heater is leaking from the bottom of the tank. Can it be repaired?

A: If the tank itself is leaking, replacement is usually necessary. A leak from the tank body generally means corrosion has compromised the tank, and that's not something that can be reliably patched. A leak from a valve, fitting, or connection is different and may be repairable. If you notice water pooling around the base of your water heater, don't ignore it. Call us at 708-801-6530 so we can determine where the water is coming from and help prevent additional damage.

Q: What size water heater do I need? My family of five keeps running out of hot water with our current 40-gallon tank.

A:If a family of five is regularly running out of hot water with a 40-gallon tank, the system may simply be too small for the household's demand. Tank size is one factor, but we also look at how many people live in the home, when hot water is being used, and the unit's first-hour rating. A larger tank may solve the problem, but depending on your usage, a tankless system could also be worth considering. Our guide on what size water heater you need for your Chicago home explains the main factors to consider before choosing your replacement.

Q: What's the difference between a standard vent and a power vent water heater?

A: A standard atmospheric water heater relies on natural draft to move combustion gases through the vent and out of the home. A power vent model uses an electric blower to help exhaust those gases, which can provide more flexibility when the water heater isn't located where a traditional chimney connection works well. Whether a power vent system is appropriate depends on the home's layout, existing venting, and other installation requirements. We'll evaluate your existing setup and let you know what type of water heater and venting arrangement makes sense for your property.

Q: Can you install a water heater that I purchased myself?

A: Yes, we can install customer-supplied water heaters. Before purchasing one, however, make sure you have the correct type and size for your home and that it works with your existing plumbing and fuel setup. When we supply the water heater, the equipment and installation are covered according to the applicable warranty terms. With a customer-supplied unit, the manufacturer's equipment warranty remains between you and the manufacturer, while our coverage applies to the installation workmanship. If you've already purchased a unit, give us the details before scheduling so we can make sure everything is appropriate for the installation.

Q: Are rebates or incentives available for a new high-efficiency water heater in the Chicago area?

A: Rebates and incentives can be available for qualifying high-efficiency water heating equipment, but programs, requirements, and amounts can change. The best place to start is by checking current offerings from your utility provider and applicable Illinois or federal programs before purchasing your new system. If you're considering a high-efficiency or tankless replacement, we'll also help you compare the equipment options and installation requirements so you can understand the overall investment before making a decision.

They called to see if it would be okay if they came earlier than our scheduled appointment (awesome). Upon arrival, Mike and Adam were extremely professional and courteous. Mike is very knowledgeable. He managed to troubleshoot a water pressure issue quickly and resolved it in no time. He also brought a drain pipe issue to my attention (the build up of grease) and suggested several low-cost recommendations to remedy it myself. The kitchen faucet and sink are back to working the way they should. I couldn't be more happy with the service. I would highly recommend them and plan on using them for any future plumbing needs.

First Will had to assess the problem and unfortunately we did need a new hot water heater. He arrived to install it on the scheduled day and did a great job. He also recommended a smaller heater - we didn't need such a big heater - which will save us money in fuel costs. Overall great job

We had an issue with how our water heater vent had been installed and just needed it to be adjusted. Every other plumber we had out to look at it tried to sell us a new water heater. Mike came and gave a very common sense idea for how we might revent it using the existing vent lines. He clearly knows his stuff and doesn't just try to sell you something you don't need. While he was here, we also had him fix a leaking valve which he was able to do quickly and efficiently. Very happy with the service and will call again with plumbing matters in the future!
